What is a Gatekeeper?
Someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide. Gatekeepers can be anyone, but include parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, ministers, doctors, police officers, and community members.
Question: Learn how to ask direct, empathetic questions to determine if someone is having suicidal thoughts. By openly discussing the topic, you can create a safe space for them to share their feelings and concerns.
Persuade: Understand how to offer hope and support to someone who may be struggling. Through active listening and compassion, you can help them see that there are people who care about their well-being and that help is available.
Refer: Discover how to connect the person to appropriate resources, such as mental health professionals, hotlines, or support groups. Providing concrete steps for them to seek help is crucial in ensuring their safety.
